The Les Bleus captain bemoaned his side’s tactical and technical failings following their semi-final defeat to Spain.
Kylian Mbappe cut a dejected figure as he reflected on France’s heartbreaking exit from the World Cup semi-final. Speaking to broadcasters M6 and Fox Sports, the talismanic forward pulled no punches regarding the team’s collective shortcomings: “We failed to execute our game plan, both tactically and technically. We simply didn’t reach the level required. When you fall short of your standards in a World Cup semi-final, you simply don’t win,” he admitted.
Assessing the Spanish national team’s clinical display, Mbappe was quick to praise the victors’ efficiency: “Spain remained true to their identity; they are a side that thrives on possession and dictates the tempo. We attempted to press high to unsettle them, but we couldn’t sustain it. We were plagued by technical errors and lacked the clinical edge to hurt them in the decisive moments,” he lamented.
The forward also identified glaring tactical deficiencies that proved costly during the encounter: “We allowed them to control the rhythm of the game. It was our responsibility to shift that momentum, and we failed. From the first whistle, we were frequently overrun in midfield during our press. Fabian and Rodri were afforded far too much time on the ball; our communication in the press was non-existent,” he observed.
When pressed on where the game was lost, Mbappe was characteristically blunt: “We needed to win our individual battles and force them to run, as they are a team that hates being without the ball. Even when we did regain possession, our distribution and first touches weren’t at the standard a World Cup semi-final demands. When those mistakes stack up, defeat is the inevitable result,” he asserted.
To conclude, the French captain opened up about the emotional toll of the exit: “It is an immense disappointment, one that is difficult to articulate. We dreamt of reaching the final and making history for our country. Now, we must face this with our heads held high. Football waits for no one; we have to recover, regroup, and move on, as new challenges await us with both our clubs and the national team,” he finished.
