For just the second time in their history, ‘El Tri’ have reached the World Cup knockout stages after a hard-fought victory over Germany.
This was a far cry from the dominant Germany side that dismantled Curacao. Julian Nagelsmann’s men, who had already begun to stutter in their narrow 2-1 win over Ivory Coast, suffered a significant reality check as they fell to Ecuador in their final group-stage fixture. It marks a historic milestone for Sebastián Beccacece’s side, who battled relentlessly to book their place in the knockout rounds of the World Cup.
Sane strikes amidst heated controversy
The game burst into life almost immediately, with the deadlock broken inside two minutes. Germany took an early lead when Pavlovic bypassed Vite with a clever ‘sombrero’ flick; despite Ecuador’s furious appeals for a foul, play was allowed to continue. Wirtz capitalised, providing a pinpoint assist for Leroy Sané, who made no mistake from inside the area to ripple the net. The opener was shrouded in controversy, as replays showed Pavlovic’s boot had caught Vite in the face, yet referee Tori Penso stood by the decision.
Ecuador’s response was instantaneous. In the 9th minute, they restored parity with a moment of pure individual brilliance. Nilson Angulo picked up the ball in the final third, drove purposefully towards the edge of the box, and unleashed a clinical right-footed strike that curled beautifully into the bottom corner. Neuer lunged at full stretch but could do nothing to prevent the equaliser: 1-1!
Following the frantic start, the match descended into a gritty, physical encounter with clear-cut chances at a premium. The only major scare of the first half arrived in the 34th minute when Musiala bore down on goal in a one-on-one with Galíndez, only for a heroic, last-ditch sliding challenge from Ordonez to keep the scores level.
VAR drama and Plata’s decisive blow
The second half exploded into action from the first whistle. Barely seconds after the restart, Havertz was upended in the box by Ordonez within point-blank range of the goal. The referee initially pointed to the spot, but a VAR intervention prompted an On-Field Review. Tori Penso eventually spotted a prior foul by Sané on Vite in the build-up, overturning the penalty to the frustration of the German bench.
As the clock ticked down, the game became increasingly cagey. However, fifteen minutes from time, Enner Valencia almost caught the Germans cold with a ferocious long-range effort that forced Neuer into a spectacular flying save.
The defining moment arrived in the 80th minute. From a well-delivered corner, Rodríguez flicked the ball on at the back post, allowing Gonzalo Plata to ghost in and scramble the ball home for a 2-1 lead.
In a tense finale, Ecuador retreated into a defensive shell, throwing bodies on the line to protect a monumental victory that secures Beccacece and his squad a coveted place in the Round of 32.
