Nico Williams faced FC Barcelona last weekend, the club he rejected before renewing his contract with Athletic until 2035. In an interview with ‘GQ’, the winger explained his decision was guided by his heart and came to the defence of his friend, Lamine Yamal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The summer transfer window was dominated by the protracted saga linking Nico Williams to FC Barcelona<\/strong>. When a move to Catalonia seemed virtually inevitable, the winger stunned many by turning it down and signing a new long-term deal with Athletic Club instead. Speaking on Thursday\u2014just days after being booed at the Camp Nou\u2014he reflected on that choice and explained what ultimately shaped it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the 23-year-old, emotion was the decisive factor. \u201cI\u2019ve always listened to my feelings and followed my heart<\/strong>. I\u2019m very close to my family and my people, and here in Bilbao I have those I love\u2014the ones I turn to before making any big decision,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His brother I\u00f1aki <\/strong>also played a crucial role in convincing him to stay, even during moments when Nico felt the pressure of criticism from parts of the fanbase. \u201cI always listen to my brother; his advice is invaluable. And now, being able to play in the Champions League together is a dream.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something we\u2019ve imagined since we were little. It\u2019s a reward for all the effort<\/strong> and everything we\u2019ve been through together,\u201d Nico continued, making it clear that he sees himself at Athletic for many years to come. \u201cI still have so many dreams to fulfil. I want to keep growing, win trophies with this club, and leave a legacy that makes our fans proud. That\u2019s the real objective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the factors that fuelled Barcelona\u2019s interest was Nico\u2019s strong bond with Lamine Yamal<\/strong>, forged with the Spanish national team. The winger praised the teenager warmly: \u201cLamine has incredible talent and he shows it every day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nico also defended Lamine, who has occasionally faced criticism for off-field matters, including on his 18th birthday. \u201cEveryone lives their life how they want<\/strong>, but the important thing is to be professional and give everything when it\u2019s time. Off the pitch, we all need to disconnect and have fun, like anyone else.
