Liverpool visit Eintracht Frankfurt on matchday three of the Champions League. Despite being on a four-match losing streak, it should be a comfortable game for the Reds in light of their recent winning streak on German soil.
Liverpool travel to Germany to face Eintracht Frankfurt away from home on matchday 3 of the Champions League, a country where the Reds have recently done quite well, a far cry from the nightmare that playing on German soil used to be for the English side.
The Merseyside team will be looking for their fifth consecutive victory in Germany after claiming four wins in their last four visits to Bundesliga teams, beating Hoffenheim 2-1 in August 2017, beating Bayern Munich 3-1 in March 2019 and claiming two victories against RB Leipzig, 2-0 and 1-0, in February 2021 and October 2024.
However, the curious thing is that the Reds have managed to turn what was once a real nightmare for the Anfield side into good fortune, having only won twice in Germany in their entire history before this recent winning streak, when they beat Bayer Leverkusen 1-3 in March 2005 and Dynamo Dresden in March 1973.
In fact, during the 20th century, Liverpool’s nightmare on German soil was such that the Premier League side won only one of the 13 matches they played there, suffering five defeats and being held to seven draws. In other words, before Liverpool’s current good run on German soil, the Reds had a record of two wins, ten draws and six defeats when visiting Bundesliga teams, which has now changed to six wins and could become seven if Arne Slot’s side continue their good run against Eintracht Frankfurt.
The match against the Eagles presents a unique opportunity to lift the spirits of a struggling Liverpool side, which is on a run of four consecutive defeats, visiting a team that has claimed just one win in their last five matches in all competitions and which this time will see Hugo Ekitike on the opposing side instead of in the home team’s line-up.
