Hansi Flick, who criticised the handling of Lamine Yamal’s fitness issues, has received the backing of Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director. The Portuguese official supports the German coach and urged Spain to be “a bit more careful” with the player.
Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director, has thrown his weight behind Hansi Flick’s opinion regarding the management of Lamine Yamal’s fitness concerns by the Spanish national team, urging them to exercise “a bit more caution” with the young Barcelona forward.
“We agree with what the manager said, because he is an important player for us and for the national team. We all need to be a bit more careful,” the Portuguese told the club’s media before Sunday’s match against Valencia.
Lamine Yamal was absent in the ‘Cules’ curshing win over Valencia and doubtful for Thursday’s clash against Newcastle due to a groin issue that, according to the Barcelona coach, he was already suffering from during the two World Cup 2026 qualifying matches that Spain played against Bulgaria and Turkey on 4 and 7 September.
In this regard, Deco stated that he “agrees” with Flick, asserting that “we need to improve communication and protocols between clubs and national teams”.
“Players are subjected to too much strain, there are many things that need improving,” reflected the Barcelona sporting director.
