After 20 years at Paris Saint-Germain, French defender Presnel Kimpembe, 30, has left his boyhood club and signed for Qatar SC, the Qatari club announced on Sunday on its X account.

The terms of his transfer have not been specified at this stage.

Arriving at PSG in 2005, at the age of 10, Kimpembe, World Cup winner with France in 2018, had become one of the faces of the capital club, with whom he has won the French league eight times and participated in the Champions League title last May.

Victim of a ruptured Achilles tendon in February 2023, he has never managed to regain his best form since and was no longer in the plans of Luis Enrique, the Spanish coach of the Parisian club.

Returning to competition at the beginning of the year, he has only played a few snippets of matches: two in Ligue 1, two in the Coupe de France and one in the Champions League, during the return leg of the play-off against Brest.

In total, Kimpembe has played 241 matches in the PSG shirt, scoring three goals. He was also the vice-captain, behind Brazilian Marquinhos, his colleague in central defence.

With the France team, he has 28 caps, including one at the World Cup won in 2018 in Russia, but has not been called up by Didier Deschamps since June 2022.

In a statement, Paris Saint-Germain hailed “a major player in the history of the club” and “wishes him well for the rest of his career”. President Nasser Al-Khelaifi considers him “an ambassador and a model of professionalism.”

His new club, Qatar SC, is currently second in their national league, with three wins in as many matches played.
