Chelsea announced on Monday that they are recalling Marc Guiu from his short-lived loan spell at Sunderland. The London club have made this decision following Liam Delap’s injury. Enzo Maresca is guaranteed an additional option in attack.
Chelsea have decided to cancel Marc Guiu’s loan to Sunderland and recall the Spaniard following the injury to Liam Delap, who could be sidelined for two months. The striker was injured this Saturday in the win against Fulham, and Enzo Maresca, coach of the ‘Blues’, confirmed that he will be out for between six and eight weeks.
This setback triggered a series of moves by the Londoners, first to prevent Nico Jackson’s departure on loan to Bayern Munich, despite the forward already being in Bavaria ready for a medical, and later to call Sunderland to recover Guiu.
Guiu arrived at Chelsea from Barcelona last summer for around £6 million, but his involvement was practically restricted to the Conference League, which the ‘Blues’ won against Real Betis.
In search of minutes, the 19-year-old Spanish striker signed a loan deal with Sunderland until the end of the season and scored his first goal last week in the League Cup. As there is no clause as such to recover him, Chelsea are expected to compensate Sunderland financially, who should take advantage of the last hours of the transfer window to find a replacement.
