Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois said after the ‘Merengues’ 1-0 win over Juventus in the last 16 that those who criticise the standard of the Club World Cup are just Twitter fans who don’t understand football.

Real Madrid did their job against Juventus and claimed a hard-fought 1-0 win over the ‘Vecchia Signora’ to book their ticket to the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup, where they will face Borussia Dortmund, who beat Monterrey in the last 16.

The new format of the competition had been heavily criticised by many fans as not being of a high standard, but as the games have gone on many fans have been surprised to see underdogs such as Al Hilal and Fluminense knocked out European giants Manchester City and Inter Milan respectively.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois said after his side’s win over the ‘Bianconeri’ that those who have criticised the standard of the Club World Cup are just Twitter users who don’t understand football.

“If you believe four Twitter users who say the Club World Cup is worthless, you’re wrong. Everyone who knows about football knows the level of the teams,” he told reporters.

“People who truly understand the game know that Brazilian teams are strong, that Al Hilal is a great side, that Monterrey could beat Dortmund — and that European clubs aren’t automatically the best. That’s just the reality. The level of the Club World Cup is high, and it shows in every match,” he concluded.
