Pep Guardiola has lavished praise on Lamine Yamal, insisting that, just as was the case with Messi, the Barcelona starlet deserves to be among the club’s highest earners despite his tender age.

Speaking at a press conference at the PGA Catalunya resort in Girona, where the Legends Trophy charity golf tournament organised by the Guardiola i Sala Foundation is being held, the Manchester City boss and renowned Barcelona figurehead offered glowing remarks about Lamine Yamal.

When asked about comparisons between Lamine Yamal and Lionel Messi, Guardiola urged patience, saying the young winger should “forge his own path”.

“We’ll see later whether he can be compared to the greatest, but there’s no doubt he’s a very talented player. He’s in the best place to develop, surrounded by teammates he knows well. If he avoids injuries or setbacks, he’s set for a great career,” he said.

Commenting on Yamal’s potential Ballon d’Or candidacy, Guardiola noted that being considered among the world’s best at 17 is something to be “very proud of” and added that he deserves it.

Regarding the player’s contract extension with Barcelona until 2031 and the possibility of him becoming the club’s highest-paid player, Guardiola said he doesn’t believe the pressure will affect the teenager.

“If they’re paying him, it’s because he deserves it. This affected Messi not at all. Clubs aren’t foolish—if they pay, it’s because he deserves it. I’m happy for him and for Barcelona,” he concluded.
