Former Real Madrid star Luis Figo recently weighed in on the debate surrounding the Ballon d’Or. Unlike many other former players of the club, Figo expressed his belief that Rodri’s victory in securing the prestigious award was well-deserved.

The Portuguese legend avoided any controversy surrounding Vinicius Jr.’s failure to win, instead focusing on the merit of Rodri’s achievements over the past season.

Figo emphasised that Rodri’s performances for Manchester City last season were pivotal, especially in helping his team achieve significant success.

He highlighted that the Ballon d’Or is awarded based on a voting system involving over 100 journalists, each following specific criteria.

“We should not doubt the value of what the Manchester City player did last season,” he said as quoted by SPORT.

The former Portuguese international acknowledged that players who miss out on the award might feel disappointed, but he underlined that such sentiments should not overshadow the value of the winner’s achievements.

“I think it was fair. It is a vote of more than 100 journalists based on certain parameters and the decision must be respected. Anyone who is nominated can win.”

Rodri played a crucial role in Manchester City’s success last season, which included their historic treble-winning campaign. According to Figo, anyone nominated for the award has a legitimate chance of winning, but only one can ultimately take the prize.

“Logically, those who don’t do it are sad, but I think we shouldn’t doubt the value of what the winner did last season,” he added.

Switching his focus to Real Madrid, Figo also offered his perspective on the club’s start to the season. He pointed out that criticism or praise in football often depends heavily on results, and Real Madrid is no exception.

“In the world of football, you can get sticks or praise depending on the results.”

The team’s recent back-to-back victories have restored confidence among fans and the media. Figo believes this resilience is part of the club’s DNA, as Real Madrid has long been recognised as one of the best teams in the world.

“It’s the DNA that the club has. Madrid are one of the best teams in the world and you always have to keep that in mind. He’s used to winning,” he added.
