Mamardashvili admits Valencia’s goal is to avoid relegation

Giorgi Mamardashvili, speaking to Georgian state television, said he is “100%” focused on his remaining season with Valencia before joining Liverpool. He also admitted that the Mestalla side’s goal is to avoid relegation.

Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will play for Liverpool next season, said he wants to focus “to the maximum” in the coming months to help Valencia, who are in the relegation places in La Liga, avoid relegation. “I’m focused to the maximum, 100 per cent, to help my team keep their place in La Liga. I will work hard for that,” he said.

He felt that no one in the Valencia squad expected such poor results at the start of the season, a bad run which he linked to the lack of experience of many players due to their youth. “We have not been lucky with the calendar at the start of the season. We’ve had to play big teams like Barcelona, Atletico and Athletic,” he added.

He also stressed that all the Valencia players are aware that the season will be “complicated”, but believe that they will be able to “reverse the situation”. “Now, there are games coming up in which we can take points. We look to the future with hope,’ he said.

Regarding his future at Liverpool, the Georgian goalkeeper revealed that he is studying English and following Premier League matches. “I was attracted by Liverpool’s project when the club’s representatives met me to sign me. I will fight for the starting goalkeeper position even if the current goalkeeper does not leave the team,” he said, referring to Brazilian Alisson.
