Jose Maria Gimenez and Antoine Griezmann, who scored both goals on the night against RB Leipzig, spoke to the media after Thursday’s game. Both were satisfied with the result and, above all, optimistic about Atletico’s future in Europe’s top competition.
Defender Jose Maria Gimenez said Thursday that in Atletico’s Champions League match against RB Leipzig his team “never stopped fighting, dreaming and believing” and in the end got the winning goal, which is “a merit of the teamwork throughout the game”.
“We started with a defensive lapse. We always talked about counter-attacks, how to hold our opponents, we knew they were opponents who could take cover at the back and come out on the counter-attack. That’s how the counter-attack ended in a goal,” said the Uruguayan centre-back.
“With a goal against it becomes much more difficult, but the team never stopped fighting, dreaming and believing and the goal came at the end, which is a merit of the work throughout the match,” he added in statements to ‘Movistar’ on the Metropolitano pitch.
Gimenez scored the winning goal. “We’re fine, happy, enjoying ourselves. In the end, it’s everyone’s job. I’m grateful to my teammates for the confidence they always give me, to the coaching staff who always trust me and to these beautiful people (the fans) who always support me,” said the player.
Griezmann, meanwhile, expressed that they have to “keep going like this” because they are “on the right track”, but warned that “it’s only the beginning”.
“We have tried until the last moment. We know we have the players to score the goals. We have to keep going like this, we’re on the right track, but it’s only the beginning,” he told ‘Movistar’ on the pitch.
“We knew that any loss in midfield could cost us a goal. That’s what happened on the first play. In the end, we were calm enough to go for the game, the result and we made a great effort,” he added.
