OFFICIAL: Marc Bernal to spend a year out of action after surgery

Barcelona issued a medical statement on Monday to announce that Marc Bernal’s surgery was successful and that he will be out of action for 12 months.

17-year-old Marc Bernal faces around 12 months out of action after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Barcelona announced on Monday that the academy player has already undergone a successful surgery led by Dr Joan Carles Monllau.

However, this does not mean that he will not miss the rest of this season and the start of the next campaign. “Marc Bernal successfully underwent surgery this morning to repair an injury to his left ACL and external meniscus. His estimated recovery time is 12 months,” the Spanish club wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The youngster had earned himself a starting place at the start of the post-Xavi era at the Catalan side, taking advantage of the fact that Frenkie de Jong is sidelined with a right ankle injury for which he does not want to undergo surgery.

By the time Marc Bernal returns, Barcelona will not only have finished their 2024/25 season, but will have started their 2025/26 campaign. The rest of the dressing room have shown their support for him and he has received some affection from Thiago Alcantara.
