As the hours to the end of the transfer window are ticking away, Barcelona’s financial horizon is beginning to clear. According to reports in Catalonia, president Joan Laporta has reportedly reached a new agreement with Nike for 90 million euros per season.
It has not been easy, but relations between Barcelona and Nike are getting back on track. The Calatans woke on Tuesday to the news that the board has almost finalised a new contract with the sportswear brand, which is a key step towards the club’s compliance with the salary cap.
According to ‘Jijantes’, Barcelona have already sent part of the documentation to La Liga for review and approval. The achievement of this contract will mean an important financial injection not only in the future, but also immediately, for the club. This is how they would be able to comply with the league’s financial rules.
Barcelona will pocket 90 million euros per season with this new agreement and it will run for ten years, i.e. until 2034. In addition, Nike will pay a premium of 120 million euros that will go directly to the club, according to ‘El Chiringuito’.
This whole situation stems from Joan Laporta’s attempts to break the club’s relationship with Nike since 1998. According to the current board, the American brand had committed serious breaches of their agreement and imposed abusive clauses, as well as suffering supply problems.
In the face of these accusations, relations were strained and there was talk of a rapprochement with Puma, but all this came to nothing. Barcelona resumed contact due to a lack of salary fluidity and this summer things have started to flow again. In the end, everything points to the Catalans coming out of this situation financially strengthened.
However, doubts remain as to whether all the paperwork will be finalised and registered with La Liga in time, before the end of the summer transfer window. And we are not only talking about the register of Dani Olmo, for which the board has managed the departures of Mika Faye, Vitor Roque and Clement Lenglet. Laporta and Deco’s objective is to close one more signing.
