Nico Williams, after Spain’s victory over Switzerland in the second round of the UEFA Nations League, posted a message on his Twitter profile and deleted it shortly afterwards. The Athletic winger wrote ‘blah, blah, blah’ alongside a shush emoticon. It is likely due to the criticism he has received for a quiet start to the season.
The Spanish national team generated some doubts with their UEFA Nations League opener. They drew goalless against Serbia with the echo of the European Championship still behind them and as reigning champions of the two championships, so a convincing win was expected, which came on Sunday night against Switzerland. Nico Williams started both matches and, after the one in Geneva, posted a tweet that he later deleted.
‘Blah, blah, blah,’ wrote the Athletic star alongside a shush emoticon. It is quite likely that he wanted to refer to the criticism he has received for a discreet start to the season and it is understandable that he has not taken kindly to some of the criticism that has been hurled at him, because, after all, his current performance contrasts with the one in Germany because the one on Teutonic soil was outstanding.
In the match against the Swiss, in fact, he triggered the second goal for ‘la Roja’ with a shot on goal that, although it was not very accurate and made an easy save by Gregor Kobel, was the prelude to Fabian Ruiz finishing off the rebound into the back of the net. So far, the youngest of the star brothers at San Mames has made 6 starts so far this season, with 4 appearances in the starting line-up and still no goals or assists.
The fans have been paying close attention to his social networks since the tournament in June and July because of the quality he showed and because of the many rumours that he has been linked with a move to Barcelona. After weeks of market reports, especially from the Catalan press, he opted to stay in Bilbao, where he renewed his contract until 30th June 2027 just ten months ago.
