Barcelona are ready to make a move for Athletic star Nico Williams despite recent reports that the Catalans would not sign him if not in the last transfer window. According to ‘Sport’, Joan Laporta’s board have decided to try to sign him next year.
Nico Williams and Barcelona were one of the hot topics of the summer transfer window. But in the end, the winger opted to stay at San Mames, where he renewed his contract until 30 June 2027.
On several occasions, the Catalan press has mentioned that Barcelona’s plan was for the player to agree to join the club during the summer transfer window as a last resort, but now ‘Sport’ newspaper claims that this is not the case.
The same media outlet reports that Joan Laporta’s board will be keeping an eye on further negotiations in 2025, when the player is expected to lock in another contract extension at Bilbao.
His termination clause is around 60 million euros, but his asking price is already close to 90 million euros. Barcelona mitigated the disappointment of not signing Nico Williams by signing Dani Olmo, who is also a European champion with the Spanish national team, for a similar figure to what Athletic would have received had the exit button for their No.10 been satisfied.
