Ever since he took charge of Barcelona, Flick made it clear that he wants a left winger in his squad, who can score and dribble. Accordingly, the Catalan giants targetted Williams from Athletic Club earlier this summer and stepped up their pursuit after the winger starred in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph. However, it now looks like Athletic Club are not eager to let their star winger leave this summer.
With Williams unlikely to arrive at the club, the Blaugrana have identified alternatives, including out-of-favour Bayern Munich and France attacker Kingsley Coman. One more surprising name that has popped up in their shortlist is Manchester United’s Rashford. Per GOL Sport journalist Albert Fernandez, Flick has reportedly requested for the club to sign the English winger.
The 26-year-old managed to score just eight goals and provide six assists across all competitions for United last season and was widely criticised for his performances. His poor form led to Gareth Southgate leaving him out of the England squad that travelled to Germany for Euro 2024. In the current season, the attacker has featured in both the matches the Red Devils have played so far and his performances in those games have been far from convincing.
The Catalan club are yet to submit a formal offer for the Three Lions star and it remains to be seen if they will consider a move before the summer window closes. Rashford will next be seen in action for Erik ten Hag’s United side on Saturday as they take on Brighton in the Premier League.
