Manuel Akanji has explained his decision to leave Manchester City, citing fierce competition for places under Pep Guardiola.

The Swiss defender admitted that with six central defenders in the squad, regular game time would be difficult for anyone.

“There were six central defenders in the squad, Pep Guardiola openly told us it wouldn’t be easy for anyone to have regular playing time,” Akanji said. He acknowledged that the situation was far from ideal but insisted he understood the challenge he faced.

“It was not an ideal situation, but I was well aware of competition for places,” he added, underlining that his departure was a pragmatic choice for his career.

Akanji’s move marks another high-profile exit from City’s defensive ranks, as players continue to seek opportunities for consistent minutes elsewhere.
