“Courtois’ gesture was ugly”

Former Osasuna goalkeeper Ricardo Lopez talked on the Local Legends podcast and, among other things, talked about the throwing of lighters in the Madrid derby between Atletico and Real Madrid, criticising the gestures of Thibaut Courtois.

Atletico have already announced that they will appeal after being sanctioned with the partial closure of the south end of the Metropolitano for three matches for the throwing of lighters in the last Madrid derby.

Former Osasuna goalkeeper Ricardo Lopez has been the latest to give his opinion on what happened that day and, for him, Diego Pablo Simeone is right.

“Courtois was unlucky. When Madrid scored, he turned to the stands and celebrated. A bit of a mismatch there, I think that’s a bit too much,” he commented on the Local Legends podcast.

For the ex-footballer, the Belgian should not have shown the lighters that were being thrown at the referee: “We have suffered everything in football and I think that as long as they don’t throw things that can seriously hurt you. A lighter is not going anywhere and I thought it was very ugly, very ugly, that he picked it up and went to show it to the referee’.

“You shouldn’t throw objects on the pitch, but we’ve lived with it all our lives. It can’t be normalised, of course. Now there is more security to prevent bloodshed and to avoid the violence that we have seen at times.”
