Betis midfielder William Carvalho undergoes Achilles tendon surgery

Betis midfielder William Carvalho underwent surgery on Tuesday to treat the complete rupture of his right Achilles tendon that he suffered last Friday.

Portugal midfielder William Carvalho underwent surgery on Tuesday in Barcelona for a complete rupture of the right Achilles tendon he suffered in Betis’ 2-0 win over Leganes at their home stadium last Friday, the Seville club said in a medical statement.

Betis said in a brief statement that the Portuguese international has been operated “successfully” in a clinic in the Catalan capital and that his recovery time will depend on the recovery proces, without specifying any expected time, although the type of injury suggests that the player will miss the remainder of the current season.

“The intervention has been carried out without incident and the player will have to remain immobilised for the first few weeks and then begin his rehabilitation phase,” explained the club.

Betis president Angel Haro and sporting director Manu Fajardo assured on Monday that the club will not try to sign a free agent to cover the absence of William Carvalho, considering that there is a “balanced” squad and with players “of hierarchy” to replace him with guarantees.
